Hundreds of protesters marched on the North Carolina legislature Tuesday as state House lawmakers prepared to debate new congressional districts designed to help protect Republicans' slim majority in Congress.
Democrats, including state leaders who helped organize the protests, have opposed the redistricting effort, calling it a racist move. The GOP-led effort targets one of the state's few Black members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill was approved by the state Senate in a series of votes Monday and Tuesday, then went to the state House for debate in a redistricting committee Tuesday. Republican House Speaker Destin Hall's office said a final vote would be delayed until later in the week.
