Bats, spiders, toads, and black cats seem to get all the attention around Halloween, with owls often left out of the discussion. That ends now, and rightfully so. There are a lot of cool things about owls, and this holiday belongs to them, too.
Owls are skilled hunters, with a variety of adaptations that allow them to find and capture prey. They can fly nearly silently because of several features of their wings. Relative to their body size, their wings are large, allowing them to achieve enough lift to fly slowly and to glide easily without frequent flapping. The feathers on the leading edges of their wings have serrations that affect airflow — breaking up potentially noisy large eddies of air into smaller ones that create less sound. Owl feathers have a velvety texture which absorbs soun
