Chattanooga residents have a new way to get rid of food and glass waste. The city launched two new pilot programs in October, and they will continue till June 2026.
The new programs were designed to address two major contributors to landfill waste.
According to the City of Chattanooga, food waste accounts for nearly 25% of landfill content and is the third largest source of methane emissions. Meanwhile, although glass is recyclable, 90% ends up in landfills.
Overlooked Materials, a locally owned company, will handle glass recycling. Glass can be transformed into several useful items, such as construction material and soil additives.
NewTerra Compost will handle food waste, focusing on turning scraps into nutrient-rich compost.
