Deeply corrugated roads leading to some of Australia's most remote communities are restricting people from visiting families and accessing health services.
The condition of unsealed roads in the shire of East Pilbara has been criticised by pastoralists, politicians and the local council in recent weeks.
The impact is apparent in the rusted skeletons of abandoned cars lining the red-dirt road to Punmu — 1,310 kilometres north-east of Perth and almost seven hours from the nearest service station.
"The road is so dangerous, it's rough, you can get three punctures on that road going up to Punmu," Western Desert Land Aboriginal Corporation chair Bruce Booth said.
