KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits may not be issued next month if the government continues to be shut down, according to the Tennessee Department of Human Services(TDHS).

The department said they were recently notified of this by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service.

At a local food Pantry, SNAP recipient Kathleen Guinn said this will hurt a lot of families.

“We come here because it is the only chance we have other than the food stamps," said Guinn.

Guinn explained that she has received SNAP benefits for a few years now, but with the cost of living rising, she still visits local pantries to help make ends meet.
