COLUMBIA — More than 650,000 people in Missouri will lose food assistance next month as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, runs out of funds due to the federal government shutdown.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture told state agencies Monday that SNAP benefits cannot be issued for November .
In 2024, SNAP reached about 656,600 Missouri residents, or roughly 11% of the state’s population, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The program primarily supports vulnerable groups. More than 68% of Missouri participants are in families with children, 34% have members who are older adults or disabled, and 38% are in working families.
