Hanna Doelger did not arrive in South Dakota expecting to be a state tennis champion.
Based on the skills she displayed in her home country of Germany, she believed she could make it on the varsity team, if she was lucky enough to go to a school that offered her main sport. When the South Dakota state tennis tournament arrived, the multi-day event was full of hard battles and intense focus. On another day, she might not have won, but Oct. 7 was her day for the trophy — and her last real match in South Dakota. ×
