KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Jamaica is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Melissa, which is intensifying as it approaches the island. Meteorologists warn that this storm could bring unprecedented challenges to Jamaica, with potential catastrophic effects. Bryan Norcross, a hurricane specialist, stated that Hurricane Melissa could be "like no storm Jamaica has encountered in modern times."

In July 2024, Jamaica narrowly avoided a direct hit from Hurricane Beryl, which passed just 20 miles south of the island as a Category 4 storm. Beryl brought winds of 140 mph, causing extensive damage. The storm downed trees and power lines, blocked roads, and destroyed infrastructure, resulting in four fatalities.

Hurricane Sandy also made its mark on Jamaica in October 2012, when it struck as a Category 1 storm. This was the first named storm to make landfall in Jamaica in October, following a long gap since Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Gilbert, a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 mph, caused significant destruction, particularly in Kingston, and resulted in an estimated $2.5 billion in damages.

Jamaica's history with hurricanes includes several notable storms. In 2004, hurricanes Ivan and Charley, while not making landfall, still inflicted around $1.4 billion in damage combined. Meteorologist Stephen Morgan highlighted the island's unique topography, stating, "What makes Jamaica so unique is its topography."

The mountainous terrain, including the 7,402-foot Blue Mountain, can disrupt tropical systems and increase the risk of flooding, mudslides, and landslides. Marissa Torres, another meteorologist, emphasized the heightened concern for Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa approaches, saying, "Any system with tropical moisture is going to be a problem, but when you add in the mountains, it is especially bad."

As Jamaica prepares for Hurricane Melissa, officials and residents are on high alert, readying for potential impacts from this powerful storm.
