ALLOUEZ, MI – A new $2 million endowment fund has been established to support the conservation of more than 20,000 acres of forestland in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
The Nature Conservancy and Keweenaw Community Foundation today announced that two major charitable contributions were received for the Keweenaw Heartlands project. Officials said the Charles Stuart Mott Foundation and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation each contributed $1 million.
“It’s a big piece of the puzzle,” said Julia Petersen, the international conservancy’s Keweenaw Peninsula project manager.
She said the Mott foundation has been supporting the effort since its inception, and the New Hampshire-based group was attracted to the strong community focus of the public land project in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
