NORFOLK, Va. — Dry and breezy conditions will lead to an elevated risk of wildfires across much of central and southern Virginia as well as northeast NC on Wednesday, between 11 AM and 7 PM.

A combination of westerly winds around 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, low relative humidity between 25–30%, and very dry vegetation will make it easier for fires to start and spread rapidly.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Even small sparks from equipment, discarded cigarettes, or unattended campfires could quickly ignite nearby dry grass or brush.

Residents should:

Avoid any outdoor burning or open flames.

Properly dispose of cigarettes and other smoking materials.

Use caution with outdoor equipment that can produce sparks, such as chainsaws or lawnmowers.
