(KRON) -- The San Bruno Police Department said it made a "significant development" in a decades-old cold case homicide involving an infant who was found abandoned and deceased in Buckeye Park in 1981.

Forty-four years ago, officers found the baby's remains in the park, and "despite an exhaustive investigation at the time," the infant's identity remained a mystery, the police department wrote.

The killer had used a sock to strangle the tiny victim, police said, and the body was placed in a garbage can.

Without the baby's name, investigators struggled to identify who was responsible for the homicide, police said. "The case remained unsolved for over four decades," SBPD wrote.
