Saddle Brook Walmart

A false report of a gunman at the Saddle Brook Walmart triggered a massive police response Tuesday morning, Oct. 21, authorities said.

Around 11:02 a.m., someone posing as a 10-year-old called the Saddle Brook Police Department desk line and claimed they were inside Walmart at 189 Route 46 West, “towards the back of the store,” where “a male dressed in all black wearing a ski mask pulled out a gun and was chasing him and his mother,” Saddle Brook Police Captain Leigh Cadigan said.

Officers from the Saddle Brook Police Department, the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office responded and cleared the store. Surrounding areas were also searched for victims or suspects, Cadigan said.

After reviewing surveillance footage, investigators determined the call was a swatting incident, according to Cadigan.

Reports of similar swatting calls at other area Walmarts could not immediately be verified.
