A Western Hockey League spokesperson said Tuesday that the league is pushing back its expansion plans for Chilliwack one season to 2027-28.

In July, WHL commissioner Dan Near said that the league had shortlisted to a “few” potential owners for Chilliwack. He declined to give an exact number. On Tuesday, the league spokesperson said that the WHL was down to a single group it was negotiating with regarding Chilliwack, and the league wanted to take more time with the process.

The league had announced last March that it was adding the Penticton Vees for the current campaign we’re in and putting a team in Chilliwack for 2026-27. They also announced then they were accepting applications for ownership for the new Chilliwack team.
