DES MOINES, Iowa —

As the federal government shutdown continues, people across Iowa and the country who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program could be at risk of losing their benefits in November.

Late last week, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services shared that it—and other departments in all 50 states— received notification from the Food and Nutrition Service the week before, directing the state to not issue November benefits if the federal shutdown continues.

According to Iowa HHS, Iowa SNAP serves 131,000 households per month.

The potential of this happening comes as food pantries and other organizations fighting food insecurity prepared for what’s always been the start of a busy holiday season.
