ORTING, Wash. — On the shared campus of Orting High School and Orting Elementary, education is happening in makeshift conditions. More than 20 portable classrooms cover the grounds, along with multiple outdoor port-a-potties for student use. And the district warns that the situation is only getting worse.
Facing overcrowded buildings, rising enrollment, and inadequate resources for student success, the Orting School District is turning to voters this November with a $137 million school bond proposal aimed at building a new elementary school and expanding facilities at the high school.
“These six portables share one port-a-potty,” said Orting School District Superintendent Ed Hatzenbeler, describing the stark conditions for students.
