MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The U.S. Marshals said a man arrested for gun charges on Monday was an admitted gang member, but the family claims that's not the case anymore.

The family said the U.S. Marshals mischaracterized their son, Barrington Harwell, 28, and claimed it was officers who asked if he had been affiliated with the Vice Lords.

He allegedly said yes, but the family said he has been inactive after turning his life around.

"Per usual, they villainize us in the news as always. The first thing they say is Vice Lord caught with a gun," Joe Harwell, father.

Harwell is facing federal charges for possessing a gun as a felon. The arrest came from a traffic stop.

WREG showed pictures of guns the U.S. Marshals said they seized from Harwell.
