After nearly a year of Canadians boycotting trips to the United States, there may finally be a glimmer of hope for the American travel industry. The World Travel and Tourism Council estimates that the decline could cost the U.S. $12.5 billion this year , but a surprising group of travelers might help ease the losses.

During a recent State of the Industry panel hosted by Discover America Canada , experts noted that Canadian seniors—also known as snowbirds—are beginning to reconsider their annual journeys south. Some are opting to return to the U.S. for deeply personal reasons. However, other senior travelers are still avoiding the U.S., choosing to visit other destinations.
