A catastrophic bus crash in Uganda has resulted in the deaths of at least 63 people. The incident occurred on the Kampala-Gulu Highway at approximately 00:15am local time. Two buses, travelling in opposite directions, collided head-on while attempting to overtake a car and a lorry, according to police reports. The collision triggered a four-vehicle pile-up, with both buses packed with passengers. As one bus swerved to avoid a crash, it struck the other bus, leading to a chain reaction that involved additional vehicles overturning as they tried to navigate the scene. Emergency services found dozens of injured individuals by the roadside when they arrived in Kitaleba village, Yumbe District. Authorities have expressed concern that the casualty count may rise due to the severity of injuries sustained by some victims. The buses involved were operated by separate companies, Planet Company and Nile Star. In addition to the buses, a Toyota and a Tata lorry were also damaged in the crash. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the precise cause of the accident. Kananura Michael, the Director of Traffic and Road Safety for the Uganda Police Force, stated, "As investigations continue, we strongly urge all motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads, especially avoiding dangerous and careless overtaking, which remains one of the leading causes of crashes in the country." This tragic event follows a series of road accidents in Uganda, including a previous incident in August 2024, where 16 people died after a bus collided with a stationary trailer on the same highway. The Kampala-Gulu Highway is one of the busiest routes in Uganda, and the police have reiterated the importance of road safety. They extended their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to those injured in this horrific crash.
