While there are plenty of obvious reasons to visit Iceland, there's one lesser-known bonus to the destination: Iceland is the only country in the world without mosquitoes (besides Antarctica).
Well, it used to be. On October 16, 2025, mosquitoes were found in the "Land of Fire and Ice." The incident marks the first confirmed sighting of the unwanted insect in the country.
The discovery has been linked to the rapidly changing climate of Iceland, which is warming at a significantly faster rate than the rest of the continent. The warmer winter weather, in particular, may be shifting just enough to support the most cold-resistant variety of mosquito.
