WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) -- This week marks one year since the Hawthorne fire in Berlin. During one of the most devastating wildfire seasons in our state's recent history, fallen Wethersfield firefighter Robert Sharkevich died while battling those flames. There will be a memorial service Wednesday in his honor.

The memorial service will take place at the Church of the Incarnation at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.

Sharkevich died during a vehicle accident while battling the Hawthorne fire on Lamentation Mountain last year.

This was during one of the worst brushfire seasons in the state's history, with over 605 fires reported. Crews from all over Connecticut, out of state, and even Canada came together to extinguish the flames.
