A Connecticut teen has been charged in a crash that killed a young woman and injured four others in Newtown.
Alexis Salazar, 19, of Danbury, turned himself in to police this week on multiple charges linked to an early morning Aug. 24 crash that killed a teenager in Newtown, authorities said.
Newtown police allege that Salazar was driving a 2017 Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed around 2:40 a.m., when the sports car left the road and slammed into a tree with five people inside.
Mary Cordero, 19, of Danbury, died at the scene, police said. Four others were taken to the hospital, with two others suffering serious injuries from the wreck.
Newtown police said they've spent the last month investigating the crash.
Salazar is charged with manslaughter, tampering with evidence, assault, reckless endangerment, false statement, negligent homicide, and reckless driving, Newtown police said. He was released after posting a $300,000 bond.
Mary Cordero is remembered for her love of the ocean, her musical talents on the saxophone, and her dedication to her family and friends, her obituary said.
Mary was everyone’s friend and put others before herself, she was selfless and only wished the best for everyone. Mary was a person who would want to make amends with you, she would swallow her pride and apologize even if she wasn’t wrong. Mary never had an enemy; she was loved by all.
A GoFundMe for her raised more than $10,000 of its $13,000 goal.
