A new kind of home arrived in Billerica overnight—delivered in two modular boxes and craned into place by morning. By the end of the day, the structure was waterproof and ready to walk through.

It’s called an Accessory Dwelling Unit, or ADU—a small, secondary home built on the same property as a main house. And across Massachusetts, these structures are becoming a popular solution to the state’s housing crunch.

This particular unit is being built in Linda Dahl’s backyard for her daughter, Lindsey Fitzgerald, who plans to move in with her fiancé and baby boy.
