MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) - Minot city leaders this week turned down a proposal to use up to 15% of the first penny of sales tax for property tax relief, which would have started in the new year.

The ordinance would have provided money for either permanent flood control projects or the creation of jobs.

It would also have allowed the council to approve economic development activities.

The proposal could have brought in about $13.1 million, depending on tax collection.

Those against it cited concerns over where the money would go.

Finance Director David Lakefield told the council the appropriation would still stand, but talks of making cuts could be at the forefront.
