WAGNER, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - About 75,000 South Dakotans relied on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits last year.
In South Dakota, SNAP benefits roll out on November 10 at midnight, but the government shutdown is creating worry about whether money will be loaded on the cards next month.
Wagner, South Dakota, is a checkerboard. Some land is tribal owned, and other is owned by private landowners. Residents Frances and Robin Biar said the community is close.
“They take care of each other even though we’re living in little rotten houses,” Frances.
There’s a rising tension, the uncertainty of whether there’s money for groceries next month.
“Not just our people, it’s a lot of people in the community that are going to be impacted,” Frances explained.
