As South Dakota marked Winter Weather Awareness Day, the American Red Cross asks residents to start preparing for what a La Niña winter could bring.

Dakota News Now meteorologist Jason Lilek said the weather pattern could lead to colder-than-average temperatures, as well as more frequent snowstorms and precipitation across the region.

“So, in that time we could see below average temperatures, we could see more snowstorms and stuff like that,” Lilek said. “Obviously, things can change in how many snowstorms we get as we’ll be forecasting throughout the year, but that’s what we will be expecting.”
