BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

The Jimmie Hale Mission is planning to build a new $4.5 million emergency shelter in Birmingham to provide a safe haven for people in desperate need of housing.

Jimmie Hale Mission Executive Director Perryn Carroll said the shelter will cost around $4.5 million, with funding coming from the city and various fundraisers.

"This provides a pathway for us to develop relationships and build trust with those who are on the street, many of whom have had terrible circumstances in their life, and by building that trust, they're more likely to enter a program such as the one we have at Jimmie Hale Mission, and that leads to becoming a productive member of the community," Carroll said.
