NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana could see a halt in food assistance next month if the federal government shutdown continues, Gov. Jeff Landry warned Wednesday.

Landry said SNAP benefits, which help feed about 800,000 Louisianians each month, will not be reloaded starting Nov. 1 because the funds are unavailable. The program supports roughly 16 percent of the state’s population, with a family of four receiving up to about one thousand dollars in benefits.

During the last partial government shutdown in 2019, under then-President Donald Trump, Louisiana SNAP benefits were also in jeopardy, but were paid out about 10 days early thanks to a continuing resolution. Landry blamed Democrats for the current funding standoff.
