MACOMB (WGEM) - McDonough County Sheriff Nicholas Petitgout confirmed on Wednesday that the deputy who negligently discharged a firearm at McArthur School will not face criminal charges.
“A determination has been made that no criminal charges will be filed in this case,” Petitgout said.
Petitgout said the McDonough County State’s Attorney was originally handling the case, but gave it to an independent agency to stay unbiased.
The State Appellate Prosecutors’ Office made the final call on whether MacDonough County Chief Deputy Adam Cremer would be charged or not.
Petitgout said Cremer is currently on unpaid leave.
“We continue to train our staff on the incident to ensure it never happens again,” said Sheriff Petitgout.
