KAUAI, Hawaii (Island News) – The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) is monitoring a positive wastewater sample for the measles virus in Kauai County, making the first detection of its kind in the area.
According to the DOH, the sample was collected on September 24, 2025, in East Kauai County, and the result was communicated on October 20, 2025. No suspected measles cases have been reported on Kauai.
Municipal wastewater samples from across Hawaii are analyzed weekly at the University of Missouri to identify bacterial and viral generic material. The recent sequencing data revealed the presence of the measles virus genotype D8 from the sample.
