BASEL - Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov advanced to the quarterfinals with straight-set wins at the Swiss Indoors on Thursday.
Auger-Aliassime, the 2022 and 2023 champion, fired 28 aces in a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) win over Croatia’s Marin Cilic.
The Montreal native won 96 per cent of points on his first serve and didn’t face a break point.
Shapovalov posted a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over France’s Valentin Royer, striking 11 aces.
The Richmond Hill, Ont., product broke the Frenchman three times and won 76 per cent of first-serve points.
Auger-Aliassime next faces American Ben Shelton or Spain’s Jaume Munar, while Shapovalov meets Joao Fonseca of Brazil.
