Two local veterans, Earnest Sanford Sr. and James B. Washington, were recently honored with handcrafted Quilts of Valor recognizing their service to the United States Army.
Sanford, who served from 1945 to 1946, was stationed in Indianapolis, Pearl Harbor and Fort Sheridan, Illinois, where he worked on the installation and repair of pipe systems and insulation projects.
He received the Army Service Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon and the WWII Victory Medal before being discharged at the rank of E-4.
His quilt was pieced and bound by Edna Gilmer and quilted by Penny Willingham. Gilmer was also present for the presentation.
Washington served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves from 1978 to 1990 and again from 1992 to 1996. He worked as a personnel administrative specialist, man
