NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — A large roughtail stingray was caught on camera off the coast of Rhode Island.

The Atlantic Shark Institute (ASI) shared the video captured by their Baited Remove Underwater Video system (BRUVs) on social media last week.

According to ASI, roughtail stingrays can grow to be seven feet across and weigh more than 650 pounds. The species will partially bury itself in the sand so it can ambush passing prey.

"We encounter large numbers of this species every summer when the waters warm to temperatures they prefer," the institute said. "Then they head south when colder temperatures push them out of New England waters."

Last month, the BRUVs captured a juvenile great white shark swimming near Block Island. You can watch that video here.
