POLK COUNTY, Iowa — The Polk County Board of Supervisors is pledging $200,000 to support a statewide water monitoring program. The Iowa Water Quality Information System tracks the state's water quality data by examining nitrates and temperatures.

The program is set to end next summer, but there is hope that other counties, such as Johnson and Linn, will contribute.

"To interrupt that data would be detrimental to the center for the research and for the science," Matt McCoy, Polk County Board Chair, said. "Hopefully, in the effort to balance the state budget and work with our partners, they'll see the value in this and work together."

The program has relied on grassroots funding for the past two years after Gov. Reynolds redirected funds away from the system.
