ELK MOUNTAIN, Wyo. – A semi-truck crashed into the Medicine Bow River early on October 21, prompting a quick response from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
The incident happened just after 4:00 a.m. at milepost 228 on I-80. The semi-truck, which was transporting potatoes, veered off the eastbound lane, crossed the median and ended up in the river.
Matthew Berggren, 40, from Idaho, was identified as the driver. He was arrested for DUI and is out on bond following an initial hearing.
A female passenger in the truck was airlifted to a medical facility in Colorado. Fortunately, a cat traveling with them was unharmed and has been taken to the Rawlins animal shelter.
The semi-truck and trailer were successfully removed from the river, and the Environmental Protection Agency has cleared the area.
