DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa farmers are being encouraged to plant cover crops this fall to enhance water quality and reduce crop insurance premiums.
The initiative, part of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship's Crop Insurance Discount Program, offers a $5 per acre discount for planting fall cover crops.
Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig highlighted the program's success in advancing the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy and reducing insurance costs. "We've seen strong interest in our cover crop cost-share programs this summer and fall," Naig said. He urged farmers to sign up online or consult their crop insurance agents.
