A child is fighting for life in hospital and another was seriously injured after their mother allegedly failed to give way, leading to a car crash in Melbourne’s east on Thursday night.

An 11-year-old girl is in a critical condition and four-year-old boy suffered severe but not non-life-threatening injuries after a Toyota Corolla and Nissan Skyline collided at the intersection of Wallace Road and High Street Road in Wantirna South.

The driver of the Corolla, a 38-year-old Knoxfield woman, was taken to hospital with minor injuries while the fourth passenger, a 38-year-old Knoxfield man, was uninjured.

The occupants of the Nissan, two 18-year-old men, stopped at the scene. An Ambulance spokesperson said the teenagers were taken to Maroondah Hospital for minor injuries.
