RICHMOND, Va. — Redistricting disputes are intensifying across the country, and Virginia is emerging as the next battleground.

On Thursday, Virginia Democrats announced the Commonwealth would officially become the next battleground for redrawing congressional district maps.

Virginia House Speaker Don Scott sent a letter calling lawmakers to a special meeting on Monday, which legislators confirmed will focus on redistricting.

While Democratic leaders are pushing for the effort, Republicans have dismissed it as politically motivated.

The announcement makes Virginia the second state, after California, where Democrats are seeking to counter Republican-led redistricting efforts across the country.
