ALEXANDRIA — Looking for a spark to create rhythm on the Alexandria volleyball team, the Cardinals found it to start the fourth set.
And they scored three points without setting up their defense.
An error on serve receive by No. 5-seeded Moorhead followed by a pair of Emily Doherty service aces helped No. 4 Alexandria pull away from the Spuds in four sets on Thursday, Oct. 23 in the Section 8-4A quarterfinal round at the Alexandria Area High School gymnasium. Set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-14.
The difference of the game came down to the serve for the defending Class 3A champions, as the Cardinals accumulated 13 total aces for the match. Doherty had match-best six aces, including three in the deciding fourth set and Hadley Marti picked up three aces of her own.
