KOKOMO, Ind. — Prosecutors have determined a Kokomo police officer was legally justified in a shooting that killed a college student in August.
Howard County Prosecutor Mark McCann announced Thursday, Oct. 23 that his office had completed its review of the Aug. 2, 2025 shooting death of 30-year-old Johnathan Shane Landis, a Marine veteran and honors student at IU Kokomo. Landis was shot by Kokomo Police Ofc. Daniel Hunkeler after officers responded to a report of a gunfire and a distraught individual at a residence in the 2100 block of South Lafountain Street .
According to the prosecutor's office, officers arrived to find Landis armed with a rifle outside an apartment complex. He had previously fired the rifle both inside and outside the apartment, investigators said. Landis refuse
