SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Tetrachloroethylene, also known as PCE, has been an environmental issue in Salt Lake City for decades. The contamination was first detected in the 1990s, when the chemical was found in groundwater near East High School.
This week, the Salt Lake City Department of Veterans Affairs held a meeting to discuss ongoing efforts and potential treatment plans to address the contamination.
Officials are currently in the feasibility study phase, examining cleanup options in greater detail after years of sampling and analysis. The contamination plume extends through areas near the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center, East High School, and nearby residential neighborhoods.
