Larissa Stewart has worked in her family business on Lorne Street in Sudbury for 20 years now, but the last few years have been decidedly darker.
The House of Broadloom carpet and flooring store is just steps away from the Energy Court parking lot, which in recent years has become the site of a homeless encampment.
"The commotion that's happening on a day-to-day basis — we've had fires in our garbage bins, we've had people break in," Stewart said.
"We keep the doors locked often. We don't like having anybody here alone. There's always a buddy system. We're always looking outside to make sure the area is clear."
She worries that the situation could get even worse, with the city and Greater Sudbury police planning a new approach to drug use and homelessness.
