WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Wichita State University rededicated the Military and Veterans Services building to honor Capt. Riley Leroy Pitts, the first African-American Officer to receive the Medal of Honor. The university renovated the building in 2024.
Pitts graduated from WSU in 1960 and served in the Vietnam War and worked for Boeing in Wichita.
Tragically, Pitts died in action during the Vietnam War weeks before he was set to return home to his family for Thanksgiving.
President Lyndon B Johnson posthumously awarded him the medal of honor making him the first African-American officer to receive the award.
Pitts children said the dedication helps them remember their father’s legacy.
