The Oscar Hemming saga is over.
For now.
The Finnish prospect, who is pegged as a first-round pick in next year’s NHL draft, signed with the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the British Columbia Hockey League on Thursday.
The signing marks the end of a troubled two months with the Kitchener Rangers that saw the 17-year-old and his family stuck in limbo as they dealt with a contract dispute with the forward’s former Finnish club Kiekko-Espoo.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Rangers general manager Mike McKenzie, whose team beat the Flint Firebirds 4-1 Friday night at the Aud. “I don’t know how to react to be honest.”
The Rangers selected Hemming in the first round of this year’s Canadian Hockey League import draft (56th overall) and signed him to a contract in late August w
