BRISTOL, Conn. — A new proposal for Bristol Public Schools could soon change how school safety is handled in the city.

District leaders are considering a policy that would allow certain security guards — specifically retired police officers — to carry firearms while on school grounds.

The Bristol Board of Education is expected to vote on the proposal at its next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 5.

According to district officials, the goal is to make schools safer by relying on individuals with years of experience to handle emergencies. Under the proposal, only retired police officers who left service in good standing under state statute would qualify to carry a firearm on campus.
