Labour's new deputy leader called on the party to shun the politics of Nigel Farage in her victory speech .

Manchester-born Lucy Powell defeated fellow MP Bridget Phillipson by 54 per cent to 46 per cent to be named Labour's deputy leader this morning (October 25).

The former Parrs Wood High School pupil, who has represented the Manchester Central constituency since 2012, had been part of Sir Keir Starmer's cabinet until she was sacked as Commons leader last month.

That means the 51-year-old will be free to speak out against the Government from Labour's back benches - and she wasted no time in criticising her party's direction under Sir Keir following this morning's announcement.
