Former House of Commons leader Lucy Powell was elected as deputy leader of the UK's ruling Labour Party on Saturday after defeating Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson.
Powell thanked her supporters and party members, and said she is ready to work with Prime Minister Keir Starmer “for the future of the country”.
“We have this one big chance to show that progressive, mainstream politics really can change people's lives for the better,” she said in her speech.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced Powell won 87,407 votes, beating Phillipson by 13,871 votes.
