Tucked behind Boston Common, the 218-year-old Boston Athenaeum is one of nearly 20 private libraries across the country preserving the tradition of member-supported “temples of learning.”
Once exclusive spaces for the elite, many New England athenaeums have evolved into community hubs where visitors can read, research family history, or attend discussions and art exhibits.
With its neoclassical design, centuries-old books and artworks, the Athenaeum remains a living museum of knowledge.
“It’s a museum you get to be part of,” said member David Arsenault, among those drawn to the stillness and sense of belonging these historic libraries continue to offer.
