BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- Louisiana’s special legislative session continued Saturday as lawmakers worked to prepare for a potential ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court on the state’s redistricting case.

Senate Bills 1 and 2 passed after a brief debate on the Senate floor. The bills, authored by Republican Sen. Caleb Kleinpeter of Port Allen, would delay the state’s spring primary elections by one month.

Democratic lawmakers pushed back, arguing the legislation is premature and based on speculation about how the Supreme Court might rule. The high court is expected to decide whether Louisiana’s newly redrawn 6th Congressional District, which adds a second majority-Black district, is unconstitutional.
