Canada is burning through its young nurses at an alarming rate as healthcare systems across the country struggle to retain them.
The information is revealed in a new publication released by the Montreal Economic Institute.
For every 100 nurses under 35 who registered to practice in the country, 40 other young nurses did not renew their registration in 2023 says Samantha Dagres, communications manager at the institute.
Noteworthy is that Newfoundland and Labrador had the highest ratio of young nurses leaving to those entering the workforce in 2023 according to the thinktank.
This province also saw the second-highest increase in the ratio over the previous ten years, behind only Manitoba. In both provinces, virtually all of the increase was due to large spikes in outflows in 2023.
