ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) -A man was charged on Friday after a child shot himself with a gun on Thursday.

Kalvin Jerome Fayne, 64, was charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful possession of a firearm.

According to court records, in an interview, Fayne admitted to placing two cardboard boxes on the bed with the child. He knew one of them contained a gun. Fayne left the room and later heard a pop. When he entered the room, he discovered the child had shot himself in the left side.

Officers arrived at the scene and discovered the child with a gunshot wound to his left hip and buttocks. He was conscious and treated for his injury.

The child is the son of Fayne’s wife.

Fayne admitted to being a convicted felon and knowing he should not own a gun.
